George DIVER was born in 1887 (Mildenhall Q4-1887 4A:705) son of Joseph and Eliza DIVER (née BRADLEY )

1891 census... Aged 3, he was at North Street, Kentford with his father Joseph DIVER [37] an agricultural labourer; his mother [36] ; brothers David [10] and Walter [6] and sister Bessie [1]. There was an elder daughter, Maude M born 1878. All the family were born in Freckenham.

1901 census... Aged 13, a farm labourer, he was at New Row, Freckenham with his mother, brother David and Walter, sister Bessie and new sister, Ethel [8] born in Freckenham. His father was in Woodbridge.

1911 census... Aged 23, a horse keeper on farm, was in Freckenham with his widowed mother and brother Walter (also a horse keeper). It is recorded that all six children have survived. Possibly his father was the Joseph Diver who died in 1910 in Woodbridge.

On the pension card hs mother moved from New Row, Freckenham to North Terrace, Mildenhall.




He enlisted in Newmarket. His is the next previous regimental number to Sgt William Dorling,see here so he must have been next in line when recruited
The 8th Suffolks were in the line in the Bray - Carnoy area in June 1916. They were involved in minor skirmishes, but the main effort appears to be preparing for "the Big One" on 1st July, the infamous first day of the Somme. The battalion lost six men on the 27th June, four are buried in Carnoy, two are named on the Thiepval memorial.
